Gordie Howe "cozy" after another minor stroke

Gordie Howe had another small stroke Saturday, but his son told the Detroit Free Press on Sunday that Mr. Hockey is comfortable.

“We had the ability to remove his back pain, so essentially he is kind of resting comfortably,” Mark Howe told George Sipple of the Free Press in the Detroit Red Wings-Vancouver Canucks game at Joe Louis Arena. “I’d say he likely has more good days than bad days. After all, it is difficult. He is not walking. Language is extremely, incredibly hard.

“He understands what we are saying. He realizes what is happening. When you are there with him, it is possible to socialize; it is still a good thing.”

Trailblazer Bye Dietz to enter U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame

Early in her athletic career, Karyn Bye Dietz arrived in a crossroads.

She entered the ninth grade at River Falls High School in Wisconsin shining in ice hockey and basketball. Her ice hockey aspirations, however, were met with opposition because for the female athlete, the sport was not believed to offer a career course. Her dad told her thus, as did River Falls’ varsity basketball coach. Each attempted to convince her to stick with basketball.

But there was something about ice hockey that reached Bye Dietz’s heart, the speed and elegance of being on the ice in addition to a evaluation of her will and perseverance; to live and flourish playing with lads under exacting conditions.

All 30 coaches who started the season in charge stayed thus on American Thanksgiving. There have been a few trades, but beyond two the New York Islanders made only before opening night to shore up their shield there has not been a landscape-changing move.

There have been injuries as well as the Pittsburgh Penguins will miss Pascal Dupuis as well as the Vancouver Canucks will miss for Dan Hamhuis, but no star players are lost for the season as well as a few (Victor Hedman, Zdeno Chara and Ryan McDonagh come to mind) are planning to return.
